Spanish police have arrested a fugitive known as the “Master of Escapes” after he escaped from prison four times, authorities said.
The man, who was wanted by Italy under a European arrest warrant, most recently escaped from a maximum-security prison in Italy in December. He reportedly sawed through window bars and used knotted bedsheets to lower himself from the facility.
Authorities said he had previously escaped from prisons in Terni and Parma in Italy, as well as from a prison in Belgium, where he reportedly used a human pyramid to climb over the walls.
Spanish police described the repeated escapes as something that sounded like it came from a movie, but noted that reality can sometimes be stranger than fiction.
The fugitive was arrested in Tarragona, northeastern Spain, after police tracked him to a neighbourhood where he was believed to be living.
During the arrest, he reportedly resisted, while several people accompanying him attempted to intervene. One of them allegedly injured two police officers.
Police said the man was carrying false identification documents and two €500 notes suspected to be counterfeit.
A Spanish judge ordered him to remain in provisional custody without bail while extradition proceedings to Italy continue.
