Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has released photographs that appear to show him inside the United States detention facility where he has been held since his capture earlier this year.
Maduro shared the images on Sunday through Telegram, saying he wanted to send them as a message to his grandchildren, children and supporters.
“I want you to know that we are standing firm, with our hearts full of your love,” Maduro said.
In the photographs, Maduro is seen wearing a grey tracksuit and making peace signs with both hands. He appears to have lost significant weight since his detention.
Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured in Caracas during a US military operation in January. They are currently being held in Brooklyn, New York, while facing drug-trafficking and firearms-related charges, which they have denied.
The photographs reportedly contain camera data indicating that they were taken on June 25, shortly after powerful earthquakes struck northern Venezuela, killing more than 6,500 people and causing widespread destruction. However, the authenticity of the images has not been independently verified.
Maduro ended his message by expressing confidence in the future, saying: “We will remain strong, calm and confident: God is with us. God will provide. Venezuela will rise again.”
According to a source close to the former Venezuelan leader, Maduro does not have access to newspapers or the internet while in detention. However, he is reportedly allowed to communicate with family members and lawyers by telephone for about 300 minutes each month, with each call limited to 15 minutes.
His son, Nicolás Maduro Guerra, has said that his father is in good condition and spends part of his time studying the Bible.
A US federal court in New York has scheduled Maduro and Flores’ trial to begin on June 1, 2027.
