Hundreds Turn Out for Zohran Mamdani Look-Alike Contest in New York

Hundreds of people gathered near Washington Square Park in New York City on Sunday for a look-alike contest featuring Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

The competition was won by Amadeo Fusca, who impressed the crowd with his resemblance to Mamdani. Fusca wore a suit over a New York Knicks jersey and sported a haircut and facial hair similar to those of the mayor. He received a $100 cash prize.

Nine contestants took part in the event, many copying Mamdani’s distinctive appearance and fashion style. Some wore brown suits similar to the one Mamdani wore during his 2025 mayoral campaign, while others appeared in dark suits, patterned ties, dress shoes and silver rings.

One participant even appeared shirtless in an apron, referencing a rap music video Mamdani made in 2019.

The contestants were asked to name their favorite type of pizza, with the winner ultimately determined by the amount of applause they received from the crowd.

The event initially began inside Washington Square Park, but police asked attendees to leave because organizers had not obtained a permit. The competition was subsequently moved to an area just outside the park.

Mamdani, a democratic socialist who became New York City mayor in January, has gained significant popularity among younger residents and on social media. His political agenda has focused heavily on using government policies to support the city’s working-class population.

The contest was sponsored by social media app Sonder.

It was not the first Mamdani look-alike competition. A similar event was held in Brooklyn in 2025 while Mamdani was campaigning for mayor.
