Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel has not approved the United States-backed proposal aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza, despite reports of progress in negotiations.
In a video released on Tuesday, Netanyahu said the administration of US President Donald Trump had presented Israel with a draft agreement that envisions the disarmament of Hamas and the demilitarisation of the Gaza Strip.
"We received the draft, but it is not our proposal, and we have not accepted it. We have submitted our own comments," Netanyahu said.
According to Netanyahu, US officials assured Israel that any withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza would only take place after Hamas fully disarms. However, the proposal has faced strong opposition from members of Israel's right-wing governing coalition.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Settlement Minister Orit Strook have called for a fresh cabinet vote, arguing that the current plan differs from earlier discussions. Although Israel's security cabinet had previously approved the proposal, a scheduled meeting to review the matter was postponed until Thursday.
Political analyst Tal Elovits of the Israeli think tank Molad said the renewed opposition appears to be an attempt by right-wing politicians to pressure Netanyahu ahead of the country's October 27 general election.
Elovits also noted that Israel has limited room to reject the US-backed initiative due to growing international pressure and its reliance on American diplomatic support.
Meanwhile, Israeli media reported that the military has tightened its rules for launching airstrikes in Gaza. Under the new directive, commanders must obtain approval from the Chief of Staff before carrying out most attacks, except in situations involving immediate danger.
The proposed peace plan also includes the deployment of international peacekeeping forces in Gaza if an agreement is reached.
The negotiations continue as international efforts intensify to secure a ceasefire and establish long-term stability in the region.
