Turkey's ruling alliance has introduced a draft law aimed at ending its decades-long conflict with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) by allowing many former militants to reintegrate into society under a supervised peace process.
The proposed legislation, submitted to parliament on Wednesday, would protect many former PKK members from prosecution and suspend prison sentences for numerous individuals convicted solely of membership in the group.
If approved, the law is expected to facilitate the return of thousands of former PKK fighters currently based in northern Iraq. Turkey's National Intelligence Organization (MIT) would oversee the verification of the group's disarmament, while a government committee—including the Vice President, key ministers, and the intelligence chief—would supervise the surrender and reintegration process.
The initiative represents one of Turkey's most significant efforts in decades to resolve the conflict, which began in 1984 and has claimed more than 40,000 lives while contributing to instability in Turkey, Iraq, and Syria.
Parliament is expected to vote on the draft law later this week. The government says the measure is designed to promote national reconciliation, strengthen security, and support long-term peace.
