Imran Khan Returned to Prison After Short Hospital Examination

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been transferred back to prison after doctors examined him at a government hospital and declared him medically fit.

The examination followed a Supreme Court order directing authorities to move Khan from prison to a hospital for medical care. However, instead of remaining at the private Shifa International Hospital recommended by the court, Khan was examined at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and returned to Adiala Jail early Friday.

Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said a team of doctors, including a cardiologist, ophthalmologist and physician, conducted a detailed examination and found Khan fit to remain in prison. His sister, Uzma Khan, was reportedly present during the examination.

Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), accused the authorities of violating the Supreme Court’s order. The party had expected Khan to remain under medical supervision for several weeks.

Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023. His lawyers say his health has deteriorated in prison and that he has suffered significant loss of vision in his right eye, while the government says medical reports do not show a condition requiring immediate treatment.

The early return to prison could increase tensions among Khan’s supporters. PTI has announced plans for a nationwide march on September 27, demanding access to Khan, faster hearings in his cases and his release.
