Ilhan Omar Wins Democratic Primary in Minnesota's 5th District

U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar has won the Democratic primary for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, securing the party’s nomination for a fifth term, according to U.S. media projections.

Omar, a progressive Democrat who has represented the Minneapolis-centered district since 2019, received more than 80% of the vote, defeating several challengers.

With more than 95% of ballots counted, unofficial results showed Omar with 122,640 votes, followed by former federal prosecutor Julie Trang Le with 10,201 votes and Latonya T. Reeves with 9,131 votes, according to reported results.

Other Democratic candidates included Abena McKenzie and Nate Schluter.

In the Republican primary for the same congressional seat, John Nagel was projected to win with 52.1% of the vote.

Omar’s victory puts her on track to seek another term representing Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District in the November general election.
