How Intelligence Operations Helped Police Bust Crime Syndicates in Kwara

How Intelligence Operations Helped Police Bust Crime Syndicates in Kwara

The Kwara State Police Command says it has made significant breakthroughs in its fight against kidnapping, murder, cultism, cattle rustling, armed robbery and illegal firearms trafficking across the state.

The breakthroughs, according to the command, were achieved through intelligence gathering, surveillance, digital analysis, community information and coordinated tactical operations.

Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, said several arrests had been made in connection with major criminal cases, while investigations were continuing to track other suspects still at large.

Among the cases was the July 15 kidnapping in Wande community, Ora Kingdom, where armed men abducted 26-year-old Shekinat Mukaila after shooting her father, the community's Baale, who attempted to resist them.

Police investigations led to the arrest of Aliyu Mohammed, who was accused of facilitating the kidnappers' activities. Investigators also analysed communication channels allegedly used during ransom negotiations. The kidnapped woman was eventually rescued unharmed.

In another operation around the Patigi axis, police arrested 30-year-old Haruna Rabiu, who was allegedly monitoring forest areas around Landaji and Ndeji in preparation for criminal activities. Police said he was linked to the suspected Auta Ilorin kidnapping network.

Three mobile phones recovered from him are undergoing forensic analysis as investigators seek further information about the alleged syndicate.

Missing Man's Case Turns Into Murder Investigation

Police also investigated the disappearance of 29-year-old Sulaiman Riliwan in Offa.

Investigators identified Mohammed Jamiu, who had a business relationship with the victim involving cattle, as the last person known to have been in contact with him.

Police said Jamiu allegedly confessed to involvement in a conspiracy that resulted in Riliwan's death and subsequently led detectives to an abandoned well where the victim's body was recovered.

Five additional suspects — Fashola Abdulfatai, Daniel Gideon, Adegoke Oladimeji, Aliyu Yusuf and Abubakar Ahmed — were arrested in connection with the case. Police said efforts were continuing to arrest another suspect and recover the firearm allegedly used in the crime.

In another case involving a 55-year-old man identified as Olarewaju, police said his family received ransom demands following his disappearance.

The kidnappers allegedly initially demanded N2 million, but later accepted N120,000, which was paid into a designated bank account. The victim was nevertheless not released.

Police later arrested Soliu Mojeeb Olarewaju, described as a close associate of the victim. Investigators said the suspect allegedly led them to the location where the victim's remains were recovered. His motorcycle was also recovered.

Police Target Cult Groups and Illegal Firearms

The command also reported progress in its fight against cult-related violence in Ilorin.

Operatives of the State Anti-Cultism Squad arrested Oluwafemi Bukoye, Isreal Ogungbile and Adesoye Abdulwarith, popularly known as Wadolee.

Police alleged that the suspects were members of the Buccaneer Confraternity and provided information about recent cult clashes and retaliatory attacks in Ilorin.

In a separate investigation, police arrested 31-year-old Dayo Sesan and recovered two locally made pistols and a live cartridge.

The police alleged that Sesan was a member of the Aiye Confraternity and was involved in procuring and distributing locally manufactured firearms to cult members.

Another suspected cult member, Ismail Abdulmalik, was later arrested around the Sawmill area of Ilorin, with police recovering another locally made pistol.

Police Investigate ₦200m Cattle-Rustling Case

The command also disclosed progress in a cattle-rustling investigation involving about 400 cattle valued at approximately ₦200 million.

The animals were allegedly stolen in September 2025 after armed men invaded a Fulani settlement at Fejewe Camp, near Share.

Two suspects, Mohammed Sanni and Bello Sanni, were arrested after some of the stolen cattle were allegedly identified at Share Junction Kara Market.

Police said the investigation could help expose a wider network involved in the movement and sale of stolen livestock.

Herder Allegedly Killed in Bush

Police also arrested four suspects — Ahmed Alhaji Ahmadu, Abubakar Mohammed, Mustapha Mohammed and Mohammed Tsado — over the alleged killing of a livestock herder identified as Mohammadu.

The victim reportedly disappeared after leaving home to graze animals with his younger brothers. His body was later found in a nearby bush with multiple machete injuries.

Police said his motorcycle and about ₦500,000 were also missing. The suspects have reportedly been arraigned in court.

Teenagers Arrested With Suspected Stolen Phones

During a stop-and-search operation along the Oko-Olowo-Alapa axis, Operation Harmony officers intercepted three teenagers allegedly transporting a large quantity of electronic devices.

The recovered items included 19 cartons of i17 Air Flip and i17 Air Pro Flip phones, five used iPhones, several Android phones, power banks, wristwatches and a portable speaker.

Police said the suspects could not produce documents proving lawful ownership of the items. They were subsequently charged and remanded at a juvenile correctional centre pending further proceedings.

Three-Year-Old Girl Allegedly Killed in Kaiama

One of the most disturbing cases involved the death of three-year-old Ummaiyat in Kaiama.

Police alleged that the child was left with a family member while her mother went to the market on July 25. The suspect, Sadiat Yunusa, allegedly took the girl to a nearby farm settlement and strangled her.

Police said Yunusa was arrested and allegedly confessed during interrogation, claiming that a prolonged domestic dispute and perceived neglect by her husband contributed to her actions.

She has reportedly been charged to court.

Police Promise Continued Crackdown

Commissioner Adekimi said the latest operations demonstrate the command's commitment to intelligence-led policing, proactive crime prevention and stronger cooperation with communities.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements and activities.

According to the police, the ongoing investigations show that organised crime in Kwara extends beyond individual offenders, involving networks that provide weapons, intelligence, logistics and other forms of support.

The command said it would continue working to dismantle those wider criminal networks while pursuing suspects who remain at large.
