Six people were killed on Tuesday after Iran-backed Houthi rebels launched missile attacks on a vessel in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, Yemeni authorities said.
Yemen’s coast guard reported that the victims included four crew members and two fighters from the government-allied National Resistance Forces.
According to Yemen’s internationally recognized government, the Houthis fired three ballistic missiles at the commercial vessel while it was sailing through the strategic waterway.
The attack marks the first known deaths from Houthi attacks on shipping off Yemen during the latest escalation of fighting in the country.
The situation has raised renewed concerns over maritime security in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait, particularly as the Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
The Bab el-Mandeb is a major shipping route linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and serves as an alternative route for Saudi Arabia’s oil exports.
The deadly attack came amid continued Houthi strikes against the government-held port city of Mokha and other areas of Yemen. Yemeni military officials say dozens of government troops and civilians have been killed in attacks since last week.
The escalation has also targeted oil facilities in neighboring Saudi Arabia and shipping interests in the Red Sea, raising fears that the conflict could expand to another major regional trade route.
The latest violence could further destabilize Yemen and threaten international shipping through one of the world’s key maritime chokepoints.
