Hichilema Wins Second Term as Zambia’s President

Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema has won re-election for a second term, according to the country’s electoral commission.

Official results released early Tuesday showed Hichilema securing approximately 60 percent of the valid votes, while his main challenger, Brian Mundubile, received about 38 percent.

The election, held on August 13, was marked by allegations of electoral fraud, violence and intimidation.

Authorities arrested 11 people on election night, including prominent opposition figures, during a raid that involved an exchange of gunfire. Mundubile was reportedly present during the incident.

Vote counting was also temporarily suspended after reports of violence against polling officials and the theft of ballot papers.

Mundubile subsequently called for an independent investigation, alleging that results from some polling stations may have been altered. Hichilema’s camp rejected the allegations, accusing him of making false claims.

The victory marks Hichilema’s second consecutive presidential term.
