Gunmen have killed the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, and abducted another person travelling with him.
The incident happened on Thursday at about 5pm along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway, near Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area.
According to the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, the attackers emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire on motorists.
A blue Toyota Corolla was later found abandoned on the road. The driver, identified as Ishaq Yunusa, was found dead inside the vehicle, while another occupant was taken into the bush by the attackers.
The police said security agencies have intensified operations in the area and are searching the surrounding forests to rescue the abducted victim and arrest the attackers.
Yunusa's body was taken to Grimard Hospital, Anyigba, for an autopsy.
The Kogi State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, ordered sustained security operations along the affected route and directed officers to ensure that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
The police have also advised motorists and residents in the area to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
