Gaza Remembers Journalist Anas al-Sharif One Year After His Death

Palestinians, journalists and press freedom advocates are marking the first anniversary of the death of Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif, whose reporting became one of the most recognisable voices documenting the impact of the war in Gaza.

Al-Sharif, who was born in 1996 in Jabalia refugee camp, began his career as a local cameraman before becoming widely known across the Arab world for his coverage of Israeli bombardments and their devastating impact on civilians.

He was killed on August 10, 2025, in an Israeli airstrike that struck a clearly marked press tent near Gaza City's al-Shifa Hospital. The attack also killed fellow Al Jazeera journalists Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal.

The deaths sparked condemnation from the United Nations, press freedom organisations and rights groups, with the killings cited as part of broader concerns over the safety of journalists covering the Gaza war.

In a final message recorded before his death, al-Sharif urged people to continue remembering Gaza and to remain committed to supporting the Palestinian cause.

One year later, his photographs, reports and final words continue to be shared at memorial events and demonstrations around the world, as supporters honour his work and call for greater protection for journalists working in conflict zones.

Al-Sharif's legacy remains closely associated with the documentation of the humanitarian impact of the Gaza war and the risks faced by journalists reporting from the conflict.
