Sweden Breaks Up Russian Spy Operation, Security Service Says

Sweden’s security service, SAPO, says it has disrupted a Russian intelligence operation allegedly aimed at influencing decision-making in Sweden and undermining the Nordic country and its European Union and NATO allies.

According to SAPO, the operation was planned and directed by Russia’s foreign intelligence service, the SVR, and involved three individuals operating under diplomatic immunity.

“We have been able to monitor what happened at these meetings between the individuals involved, what was said and what assignments were given,” a SAPO spokesperson told Reuters.

The security service said the individuals involved are no longer in Sweden and that it had succeeded in dismantling the operation.

“This is consistent with the threat we see Russia posing,” the spokesperson said.

SAPO declined to provide further details about the operation or disclose what specific measures had been taken against those involved.

The Russian Embassy in Stockholm did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment by phone and email.

Swedish authorities have increasingly warned about Russian intelligence activities and attempts to influence European countries amid heightened tensions between Russia and the West.
