Four Nigerians Arrested in India Over Alleged Drug Trafficking

Four Nigerian nationals have been arrested in India for their alleged involvement in a drug trafficking network, with narcotics valued at about ₹15 crore (approximately ₦2.1 billion) seized during a series of operations.

The arrests followed coordinated operations by India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), state police and other security agencies targeting foreign nationals suspected of drug trafficking and visa overstays.

The investigation began on July 18 after intelligence from the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force led authorities to Khanpur, Delhi, where more than 5kg of amphetamine was seized and Nigerian national Obase Prosper Ogboronjor was arrested. He was also wanted in an alleged cyber-fraud case involving about ₹68 lakh.

A follow-up operation in Gurugram on July 21 resulted in the arrest of Abuchi George Okorie and the seizure of 9.7kg of amphetamine and 67.84kg of pseudoephedrine, a controlled substance used in the illicit production of methamphetamine.

On August 3, investigators raided a property in Mehrauli, Delhi, recovering 318g of cocaine and 6g of heroin. Two more Nigerians, Uchenna Stephen Nwanko and Chikezie Joshua Igwe, were arrested.

The NCB alleged that Nwanko and Igwe had been living illegally in India for more than 13 years. An unidentified African woman reportedly injured herself while attempting to escape from the premises by jumping from a balcony.

The NCB has announced a nationwide campaign, “Trinetra,” beginning in September to identify foreign nationals who have overstayed their visas and are suspected of involvement in drug trafficking.
