Former RSF Commander Hospitalised After Health Deteriorates in Military Custody

A former senior commander of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Lieutenant General Ali Al-Naseeh Al-Qala, has been transferred to a military hospital in Omdurman after his health reportedly deteriorated while in military detention.

According to his family, Al-Qala was taken to the Military Medical Hospital late Sunday after experiencing breathing difficulties and mobility problems for more than a week.

The family alleged that military intelligence officials delayed responding to his repeated requests for medical attention.

Al-Qala, a former Sudanese army officer who was involved in the establishment of the RSF and previously served as its head of operations, was arrested on January 25, 2025, after Sudanese army forces recaptured the Al-Jaili oil refinery north of Khartoum.

His latest hospitalisation is reportedly his third since his arrest. He previously suffered a heart condition that required catheterisation and severe anaemia, which his family attributed to poor nutrition while in custody.

The family further claimed that Al-Qala has never been formally charged or brought before a court since his arrest. They described his continued detention as a violation of his human rights and called on army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to ensure his safety.

Sudan’s military and military intelligence authorities have not publicly commented on Al-Qala’s current health condition or the reasons for his continued detention.
