Former Councillor Killed in Fresh Plateau Attack

A former councillor, Daniel Danjuma Chong, popularly known as Hon. Star, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen during a late-night attack on Torok village in Rim Community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack reportedly occurred around 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, sending residents fleeing as gunmen opened fire across the community.

A resident, Cynitha Dung, said the sound of sustained gunfire caused widespread panic before villagers discovered that the former councillor had been fatally shot. Another resident, David Danjuma, was injured during the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) condemned the killing, describing it as another tragic attack on innocent residents of Riyom. The group extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victim a speedy recovery.

BYM urged security agencies and the Plateau State Government to immediately launch a manhunt for those responsible, strengthen security in vulnerable communities, and dismantle criminal hideouts in the area. The association also renewed its call for a ban on open grazing, arguing that criminal elements have exploited the practice to carry out attacks.

As of the time of filing the report, the Plateau State Police Command had not officially commented on the incident. Authorities are yet to confirm any arrests or identify those behind the attack.
