Five suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), including an alleged medical officer and four bomb-making specialists, were reportedly killed after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated accidentally while they were assembling explosives in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to security sources, the incident occurred at Maina Daya village, between Sabon Tumbu and Jubilaram, about 29 kilometres east of Monguno.
Those reportedly killed include an ISWAP medical officer identified as Usman Dan Fulani, two foreign Arab IED technicians, and two other experienced bomb-making experts. The explosion is believed to have occurred while the group was preparing explosives for planned attacks.
Security analysts say the deaths of the experienced bomb specialists could temporarily reduce the group's ability to carry out roadside bomb attacks in the Marte-Monguno axis.
Following the incident, troops of Operation HADIN KAI have reportedly intensified patrols and offensive operations across Monguno, Marte, and Gamboru Ngala to prevent the insurgents from regrouping and rebuilding their explosives network.
