At least 11 people, including eight children, have been killed after an explosion at a firecracker factory in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh state.
The blast occurred on Monday, killing three adults and eight children and injuring several others. Police said the youngest victim was only four years old.
The explosion also destroyed several nearby houses. Videos and images shared on social media showed rescue workers searching through the rubble as survivors covered in dust and debris were pulled from the wreckage.
Rescue teams used excavators and other equipment to search for people trapped beneath the collapsed buildings, while local residents also joined the rescue efforts.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been established.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered local authorities to provide medical treatment to the injured and support families affected by the tragedy.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sadness over the deaths and announced that compensation would be provided to families of those killed and to people injured in the explosion.
The incident is the latest in a series of deadly firecracker factory accidents reported in India this year.
The country has a large firecracker industry employing hundreds of thousands of people, but many small factories operate from homes or unsafe facilities.
The International Labour Organization has also raised concerns about children working in the industry.
