FG Deploys 100 Electric Buses to Ease Civil Servants’ Transport Burden.

The Federal Government has commissioned 100 electric buses under the Renewed Hope Mass Transit Programme to ease transportation challenges faced by federal civil servants and improve workers’ welfare.

The buses were unveiled on Wednesday at Eagle Square, Abuja, with the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, describing the initiative as an important step towards improving the welfare of civil servants.

The first phase consists of 37 buses, out of the 100 approved under the programme. Walson-Jack described the project as her “parting gift” to federal civil servants, coming less than 24 hours before the end of her tenure.

She explained that transportation has a major effect on workers’ finances, safety, punctuality and productivity. According to her, affordable and reliable transportation would help civil servants save money, reduce commuting risks and arrive at work with more energy.

Operations will begin with a pilot phase on selected routes before being expanded. The buses will also be deployed to Federal Secretariats across the states.

A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) has been established to manage, maintain and ensure the long-term sustainability of the buses.

The Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Senator John Owan Enoh, said the project goes beyond transportation, as it also supports workers’ welfare, productivity, industrialisation and technology.

He stated that each of the electric buses could accommodate up to 200 passengers and travel at least 200 kilometres on a full charge.

The Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Olu Osanipin, said the first deployment marks the beginning of a phased rollout, with all 100 electric buses expected to be deployed by December 2026.

Enoh also urged local manufacturers to invest in factories, increase local content and produce globally competitive electric vehicles.

He added that the Federal Government remains committed to ensuring that its economic reforms lead to more industries, jobs, infrastructure and improved living standards for Nigerians.
