Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa held a telephone conversation on Wednesday to discuss bilateral relations, including the future of Russia’s military bases in Syria.
According to Syrian state news agency SANA, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s support for Syria’s territorial integrity and its opposition to Israeli attacks and violations of Syrian sovereignty.
The two leaders also discussed strengthening political dialogue, trade and economic cooperation between Moscow and Damascus.
A major issue remains the future of Russia’s Khmeimim Air Base and Tartous Naval Base, which Moscow has used as important strategic facilities in the region.
Russia and Syria signed a memorandum of understanding on August 9 concerning the reorganisation of the two facilities. Under the agreement, the bases are expected to become joint training and capacity-building centres, while Syria will take control of their civilian facilities.
Russia strongly supported former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during Syria’s 13-year civil war, including through direct military intervention. Since al-Assad was ousted, Putin has sought to establish relations with the new Syrian government while protecting Russia’s strategic interests in the Middle East and North Africa.
The Kremlin said both sides agreed that Russia-Syria relations would continue through regular contacts at various levels.
