FG Boosts Lagos Electricity Capacity by 208MW With Transmission Upgrades

The Federal Government has commissioned upgraded transmission substations in Lagos, adding 208 megawatts (MW) of bulk transmission capacity to the state’s electricity network.

Power Minister Joseph Tegbe said the projects are aimed at addressing longstanding transmission challenges and improving electricity supply to Lagos’s major commercial areas.

At the Ijora substation, two new 100MVA transformers increased capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA, adding 112MW.

At the Apapa Road substation, a new Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) provided an additional 96MW, while two new 60MVA transformers and modern switchgear raised the station’s capacity from 60MVA to 180MVA.

TCN Managing Director Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz said the upgrades would increase bulk electricity available to Eko Electricity Distribution Company for distribution to areas including Apapa, Ijora, Amukoko, Ajegunle, Apapa Wharf and Tin Can Island.

The Ijora project was supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), while the Apapa upgrade was funded by the World Bank in partnership with TCN.

Tegbe said the Federal Government would continue strengthening transmission infrastructure nationwide to improve grid stability and ensure more generated electricity can reach consumers.
