Ukraine’s former Defence Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, has called on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to hold presidential elections despite the ongoing war with Russia.
Fedorov, who was dismissed from his post in July, said Ukrainians should not allow Russia to determine when they can choose their leaders. He argued that democracy should continue even during wartime.
Former Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has reportedly supported the idea, warning that the war could continue for several more years and leave Ukraine operating under the same political system established in 2019.
Fedorov remains a popular political figure in Ukraine. A recent poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology showed that 63 percent of Ukrainians trust him, placing him among the country’s most trusted potential presidential candidates.
However, political experts say holding elections during the war would be extremely difficult. Ukraine faces frequent Russian missile and drone attacks, while its constitution prohibits elections during martial law.
Analysts say a stable ceasefire of at least several months would be necessary before a nationwide election could safely take place.
Fedorov’s call has nevertheless increased political pressure on Zelenskyy, whose administration has faced criticism over corruption scandals and growing concerns about the effectiveness of state institutions.
