The Chairman of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has ordered the withdrawal of charges against Maryam Shehu and Abubakar Abdulhamad.
The two young Nigerians were arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations of cybercrime and spreading malicious information about the EFCC.
According to the EFCC, the charges were filed under the Cybercrimes Act. However, Olukoyede reconsidered the case following an appeal for leniency from Shehu’s father, as well as pleas from other Nigerians.
The EFCC chairman subsequently directed that the charges against the two defendants be dropped.
Olukoyede, however, warned that the commission would not tolerate deliberate attacks on its reputation through any medium or platform.
He also assured Nigerians that the EFCC would continue to carry out its responsibilities in accordance with its mandate and in the best interests of the country.
