The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly frozen a bank account belonging to the Osun State Government, just ten days before the state's governorship election scheduled for August 15.
According to reports, the affected account, domiciled with First Bank, has been placed on "Post No Debit" (PND) status, preventing withdrawals. The account is said to be used for the payment of workers' salaries.
The action came shortly after Governor Ademola Adeleke alleged that the EFCC was planning to freeze the state's accounts as part of efforts to disrupt government operations before the election.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the governor argued that the EFCC has no legal authority to freeze the accounts of a state government and described the move as politically motivated.
A source within the state government confirmed that the account has indeed been frozen, adding that Governor Adeleke is expected to address the public to provide further details.
As of the time of this report, the EFCC has not released an official statement explaining the reason for the account restriction. The circumstances surrounding the action remain unclear.
