East Libya Military Intelligence Chief Killed in Car Bomb Attack.

Major-General Fawzi al-Mansouri, head of military intelligence for eastern Libya’s self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA), has been killed in a car bomb attack in Benghazi.

According to eastern Libyan authorities and security sources cited by Reuters, an improvised explosive device was detonated as al-Mansouri entered his vehicle outside his home in the Hawari district late Monday.

The Prime Minister of Libya’s eastern-based government, Osama Saad Hammad, condemned the killing and vowed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.

“We condemn, in the strongest terms, this treacherous terrorist act,” Hammad said in a statement.

He added that Libya would not provide protection to anyone involved in planning, carrying out, financing or encouraging assassination and terrorism.

Al-Mansouri was appointed director of military intelligence in Benghazi in 2024, holding the rank of major-general.

His assassination comes amid continued political and security instability in Libya, where rival administrations and armed groups continue to exercise influence despite a 2020 ceasefire that ended major fighting.

Libya has remained divided since 2014, following years of conflict after the 2011 uprising that toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The LNA, commanded by military leader Khalifa Haftar, controls large parts of eastern and southern Libya and is allied with the authorities based in Benghazi.

Meanwhile, the internationally recognised Government of National Unity, based in Tripoli, maintains control over much of western Libya.

The latest killing raises fresh concerns about security and stability in the country and the ability of rival authorities to prevent attacks targeting senior military and security officials.
