Drone Attack Targets Iraqi Kurdish Prime Minister’s Office

The office of Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), was targeted in a drone attack early Monday, according to the region’s security agency.

The agency said the residence of the head of the KRG’s security and intelligence service was also targeted. No casualties were reported.

The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Service said two Hadid-110 drones were launched from Iranian territory and targeted the prime minister’s private office and the security chief’s residence. It was not immediately clear whether the drones struck their intended targets.

Barzani condemned the attack as “illegitimate and unacceptable”, describing it as a dangerous step and a direct threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region.

Iran and Iranian-aligned armed groups have repeatedly accused Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region of sheltering Iranian Kurdish opposition groups. Kurdish authorities have denied allowing their territory to be used to threaten neighbouring countries.

The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions involving Iran and armed groups allied with Tehran.
