At least 67 people have died following a massive surge of migrants crossing from Morocco into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta, Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska confirmed on Saturday. The figure marks a sharp increase from the 18 deaths reported a day earlier.
More than 60,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta overnight on Thursday, with many risking the dangerous journey by swimming around the border barrier separating Morocco from the Spanish territory. Hundreds of men, women and children were seen abandoning flotation devices and clothing as they reached the Spanish enclave.
By Saturday, Moroccan authorities had facilitated the return of most of the migrants to Morocco, while Spanish officials continued to strengthen security at the border. Madrid deployed additional troops, police officers, divers, drones and patrol boats to manage the crisis.
The unprecedented influx has sparked diplomatic tensions across Europe. Italy called for Spain to be suspended from the Schengen free-travel zone, accusing Madrid of failing to protect the bloc's external border. Finland backed the proposal, while France announced tighter border checks with Spain to prevent secondary migration.
The crisis has also drawn attention in the United States, where senior officials in President Donald Trump's administration cited videos from Ceuta to reinforce their anti-immigration stance.
The latest migrant surge is one of the largest recorded at the Morocco–Spain border since a similar incident in 2021, when thousands crossed into Ceuta during a diplomatic dispute between the two countries. Spanish and Moroccan authorities continue efforts to restore order and prevent further dangerous crossings.
