One person has been killed following a clash between suspected political thugs and security personnel attached to Nigerian Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, during a visit to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo in Osun State.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke visited the monarch’s palace alongside his nephew, Davido.
According to the Osun State Police Command, trouble began when a suspected political thug, identified as Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged,” was prevented from gaining access to Davido by the singer’s security details.
Police said the confrontation escalated after members of the suspect’s cult group arrived and attempted to overpower the security personnel, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The governor’s security team reportedly fired into the air and deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd, allowing the governor and Davido to leave the palace safely.
Davido later clarified the incident in a post on X, saying the fight occurred outside the palace and was unrelated to him.
However, police said the suspected thugs later moved towards the Ayepe area, where they allegedly shot 60-year-old Tajudeen Yusuf at Ita-Olokan.
The police confirmed the death and said an investigation had commenced. The Police Commissioner in charge of election security, Samuel Etaifo, also said resources would be deployed to arrest those responsible.
The incident comes amid heightened political tension and security concerns in Osun State ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.
