Fighting between the Ethiopian military and Tigray forces has ended after clashes erupted near the Sudanese border, according to local and security sources.
A member of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), speaking anonymously, said the situation had de-escalated after heavy fighting involving artillery and drones. The clashes reportedly began early Saturday morning in the Shererina area and ended around 5:00 a.m. on Sunday.
A security source also confirmed that the hostilities had ceased, although no official casualty figures have been released.
The TPLF accused Ethiopia's federal government of escalating tensions in the area, but federal authorities had not responded to the allegations at the time of reporting.
The fighting took place in western Tigray, a disputed territory currently controlled by nationalist forces from the neighboring Amhara region. The area has remained a major source of tension since the end of the devastating Tigray conflict.
In recent months, both Ethiopian federal troops and Tigrayan forces have increased their military presence along the northern Tigray border, raising fears of another full-scale conflict.
The previous war, which ended less than four years ago, claimed an estimated 600,000 lives, according to the African Union, making it one of Africa's deadliest modern conflicts.
Authorities have yet to provide an official assessment of the latest clashes or confirm reports from the battlefield.
