Buni Visits Nigerian Refugees in Chad

Yobe State Governor and Chairman of the Lake Chad Governors’ Forum, Mai Mala Buni, has visited Nigerian refugees at the Kaya site in Chad’s Lac Province to assess their welfare.

During the visit, Buni praised the peaceful relationship between the refugees, their host communities and the Chadian authorities. He urged the refugees to obey the law, avoid criminal activities and report suspicious persons or movements.

The governor also commended their involvement in farming and fishing, saying the activities would help them become more self-reliant. He assured them that the Nigerian government would continue working with Chad to support their welfare.

Buni encouraged refugees who wish to return to Nigeria to register with the Lake Chad Basin Commission so that their numbers can be documented and arrangements made for their repatriation to their respective states.

The leader of the refugee community, Ba Bulama Usman, thanked Buni for the visit, describing him as the first Nigerian government official to visit the refugees at the site. He said the visit had given them hope and a sense of belonging.

Buni also met with the Governor of Lac Province, Saleh Hagar Tidjani, and commended the Chadian government for accommodating Nigerian refugees and maintaining peaceful relations with them.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation on security, peace and economic development in the Lake Chad region. Buni also said efforts would continue to reopen waterways to improve transportation, security operations and the movement of goods and services.
