Australia Summons Israeli Ambassador Over Death of Gaza Aid Worker

Australia has summoned Israel’s ambassador and expressed outrage over Israel’s decision not to pursue criminal proceedings over the 2024 Gaza airstrike that killed Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom and six other World Central Kitchen workers.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the decision did not meet Australia’s expectations for accountability and vowed to continue pressing Israel for justice for Frankcom and her colleagues.

The Israeli military said its investigation found operational failures but no criminal liability or evidence of intentional targeting. Israel’s ambassador to Australia, Hillel Newman, said the attack was a tragic mistake and claimed the aid convoy had deviated from its approved route, contributing to the military’s mistaken belief that it had been taken over by Hamas.

The April 2024 strike killed aid workers from Australia, Britain, Poland, Palestine and the United States and Canada, drawing international condemnation.

Australia said it was considering further steps in response to the Israeli military’s decision.
