Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has promised to end insecurity in Nigeria within one year if elected president in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Atiku said his administration would recruit more security personnel, provide them with adequate equipment and funding, and support young people with opportunities to establish businesses.
He said these measures would help reduce criminal activities linked to unemployment and insecurity.
Atiku also pledged to strengthen regional security cooperation by engaging ECOWAS leaders to revive ECOMOG and improve collaboration among West African countries.
He said Nigeria should maintain its relationship with Niger Republic despite the military takeover in that country. According to him, Nigeria, Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali should eventually return to ECOWAS to promote regional unity and reduce unemployment.
On the 2027 elections, Atiku expressed doubts about the ability of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct completely free and fair elections. He, however, urged Nigerians to vote in large numbers, protect their votes and ensure that their preferred candidates are declared winners.
Atiku also disclosed that the 2027 presidential election would be his final attempt at becoming president. He said he would remain available to advise younger politicians if he fails to win.
On fuel subsidy, Atiku defended his promise to restore it, arguing that its removal was too sudden and had worsened the hardship faced by Nigerians. He said his administration would assess the situation and consult stakeholders before deciding how to handle the subsidy.
He also criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's decision to remove the subsidy at once, saying the resulting economic hardship had affected Nigerians, including his own farming business.
