At least 11 people were injured after a car bomb exploded near a police station in the Colombian border city of Cúcuta on Saturday, just six days before President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella is due to be sworn into office.
According to local authorities, the injured include eight police officers and three civilians. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, while security forces launched an investigation into the attack.
No group has claimed responsibility, but the region is known for the presence of armed groups, including the National Liberation Army (ELN), dissident factions of the former FARC rebels, and the criminal organisation Clan del Golfo.
President-elect de la Espriella strongly condemned the bombing, describing it as a terrorist attack against Colombia's National Police. He vowed that such violence would not intimidate the country and reaffirmed his commitment to restoring peace and security.
The bombing comes during a period of heightened political tension as Colombia prepares for a change in leadership. Throughout the election campaign, several violent incidents linked to armed groups were reported across the country.
De la Espriella, a businessman and lawyer with no previous experience in public office, has promised to intensify military operations against rebel groups and organised crime. His administration is expected to adopt a tougher security policy than that of outgoing President Gustavo Petro, who favoured dialogue and peace negotiations with armed groups.
The president-elect will officially assume office on August 7 under tight security in Bogotá, with thousands of soldiers and police officers expected to protect the inauguration ceremony.
Authorities continue to investigate the bombing as Colombia remains on high alert ahead of the presidential transition.
