The Federal Government has announced that 65 out of the 69 ambassadors-designate appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have received formal approval (agrément) from their host countries, representing about 97 percent of the diplomatic appointments.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government said the accreditation process is progressing smoothly in line with international diplomatic procedures.
The ministry explained that after the Senate confirmed the nominees, President Tinubu assigned 69 ambassadors-designate to various countries. So far, 65 have been accepted by their host nations.
According to the statement, one ambassador-designate assigned to Togo declined the appointment before Nigeria requested the host country's approval, while the ambassador-designate to Algeria died in April 2026. The government said the process of appointing a replacement for Algeria is currently underway.
As a result, only two countries are yet to grant formal approval for Nigeria's ambassadors. The ministry, however, said both countries have assured Nigeria that their consent will be communicated in due course.
The Federal Government added that it is maintaining close diplomatic engagement with the authorities of the two countries and remains confident that the remaining approvals will soon be secured.
The ministry also disclosed that many of Nigeria's ambassadors have already arrived in their respective host countries and presented their Letters of Credence, officially enabling them to begin their diplomatic duties.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria's diplomatic presence around the world in order to promote the country's foreign policy objectives and national interests.
