ASUU Alleges Lagos Professors Earn Less Than Secondary School Principals

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has alleged that professors in Lagos State-owned universities earn lower monthly salaries than secondary school principals in the state's public school system.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Lagos on Wednesday, representatives of ASUU branches from Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) accused the Lagos State Government of failing to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.

ASUU's Lagos Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Oluwaseun Babalola, said the agreement, which was expected to take effect on January 1, 2026, has not been implemented, leaving lecturers on what the union described as "starvation wages."

To support the claim, Babalola displayed a payslip allegedly showing that a secondary school principal earns about ₦799,000 monthly, insisting that no professor in Lagos State-owned universities currently receives that amount.

The union also criticized increased tax deductions, claiming that associate professors and professors lose more than ₦120,000 monthly to taxes despite their salaries remaining below expectations.

In addition, ASUU called for the reinstatement of five dismissed LASU union leaders, alleging they were removed because of their union activities. The affected officials include former Chairman Dr. Isaac Oyewunmi and four other executive members.

ASUU-LASUED Chairman, Dr. Victor Akinola, alleged that lecturers' complaints to university authorities often go unresolved and claimed that some staff members face intimidation for participating in union activities.

Similarly, ASUU-LASUSTECH Chairman, Comrade Murisiku Onigemo, said irregular promotion exercises have negatively affected staff morale and career progression.

The union urged the Lagos State Government to immediately implement the 2025 ASUU agreement, address lecturers' welfare concerns, reinstate the dismissed union leaders, and end what it described as the victimisation of academic staff.
