Assam Flood Death Toll Rises to 82, Over 1.1 Million Affected

The death toll from devastating floods in India's northeastern state of Assam has increased to 82, while two people remain missing, according to state authorities.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Sivasagar district recorded the highest number of fatalities with 42 deaths. Charaideo and Jorhat districts followed with 21 and nine deaths, respectively.

The floods have inundated 2,251 villages, affecting more than 1.1 million residents across the state. Authorities said 2,530 homes have been completely destroyed, while another 9,668 houses sustained partial damage.

To support displaced families, the state government has established 218 relief camps, providing shelter to 71,889 people. In addition, 1,811 relief distribution centres have been set up to deliver food, drinking water, medicines, and other essential supplies.

Chief Minister Sarma said relief and rehabilitation efforts are being expanded across the affected areas, with authorities working to restore normal life as quickly as possible.
