Troops of the Nigerian Army, working alongside the Nigerian Navy, Police, local vigilantes and hunters, have rescued all 16 people abducted by suspected kidnappers in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The Army said the victims were kidnapped on Sunday, August 9, 2026, after armed criminals attacked commuters along the Ojuwo–Ajengo–Memarebo and Ojiwo–Itobe roads.
Following intelligence that the victims had been moved towards Adumu Community in Dekina Local Government Area, troops of the 21 Battalion and personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship Lugard launched a joint search-and-rescue operation.
The operation involved the police, vigilantes and local hunters. Security forces eventually made contact with the fleeing kidnappers, leading to a fierce gun battle.
According to the Army, the kidnappers were overwhelmed by the superior firepower and coordinated response of the security forces and abandoned their captives before escaping into the surrounding forest with gunshot wounds.
The 16 rescued victims comprised six adult men, six adult women and four children. They were taken for documentation and medical assessment before being reunited with their families.
However, one local hunter who participated in the rescue operation was killed during the encounter, while a police officer sustained injuries and was taken for medical treatment.
The Army commended the security agencies and local stakeholders for their cooperation, describing the operation as evidence of the effectiveness of joint efforts in tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes.
The military also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide security agencies with timely and credible information about suspicious activities, stressing that public cooperation remains essential to protecting lives and restoring peace.
