Army Repels ISWAP Attack on Borno Base, Recovers Weapons

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s Operation Hadin Kai have repelled an attempted attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on a Forward Operating Base in Mandaragirau, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attack occurred at about 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, when the terrorists launched a simultaneous assault on the military base from two directions.

According to the Acting Military Information Officer of the North-East Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, Captain Muhammed Goni, troops detected the attackers through early-warning and surveillance systems and quickly deployed a combat team to intercept them.

A heavy exchange of gunfire followed, with troops successfully defeating the terrorists on one axis. Another group attempted to infiltrate the military camp but was also repelled by the soldiers’ superior firepower.

The Army said several terrorists were killed during the operation, while no Nigerian Army personnel were reported injured or killed.

Following the attack, troops launched a hot pursuit and recovered several weapons and military items, including AK-47 rifles with loaded magazines, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, bombs and chargers, a video camera, and other combat equipment.

The Army also said surveillance footage showed terrorists dragging the bodies of some of their fallen colleagues towards the Timbuktu Triangle as they withdrew from the area.

Operation Hadin Kai commended the troops of the 162 Amphibious Battalion for their courage, professionalism and tactical effectiveness in repelling the attack.

The military further reaffirmed its commitment to denying terrorists freedom of action and restoring lasting peace and security across Nigeria’s North-East.
