The Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun, has arrested 15 suspected kidnappers and other criminals accused of terrorising residents across the state.
The security outfit also rescued two farmers who were abducted along the Ondo-Ife Road in the Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government Area. However, another victim reportedly died while in captivity.
The State Commander of Amotekun, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this on Tuesday while parading the suspects in Akure.
According to Adeleye, the suspects were arrested for alleged involvement in kidnapping, armed robbery, cattle rustling, housebreaking and other criminal activities.
He said the rescue operation was conducted in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police.
Adeleye explained that Amotekun operatives were alerted after the farmers were kidnapped in Oke-Igbo, prompting members of the agency’s Special Squad to launch an immediate operation.
He said the security agencies intensified efforts to locate the victims following a directive from Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
“About 72 hours after the governor called me personally and directed that we must rescue the victims at all costs, I am pleased to announce that we successfully secured the release of the two abducted persons several kilometres away from the scene,” Adeleye said.
He added that the kidnappers attempted to mislead security operatives by providing false geolocation information.
The commander further disclosed that Amotekun arrested suspected cattle rustlers operating in Ore, Ode-Aye, Ofosu, Omotosho and Odigbo areas.
According to him, the suspects allegedly stole cattle belonging to Fulani herdsmen from three different locations and sold the animals for about ₦100,000 each. Some alleged buyers of the stolen cattle were also arrested.
Adeleye said two suspects, identified as Akinlolu and Akintimi, were facing charges for alleged illegal possession of firearms.
Other suspects paraded included Jamiu, who was accused of vandalising houses under construction and stealing electrical cables and plumbing materials, as well as Olajide and Dada, who allegedly stole iron rods from a palace in Odigbo.
The security agency also paraded a 25-year-old man accused of stealing a motorcycle and selling it in Ore.
Amotekun said investigations into the various cases are ongoing.
