30 Years On, Daughter of Slain Sikh Rights Activist Continues Fight for Truth and Justice.

Thirty years after the abduction and killing of Indian human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, his daughter, Navkiran Kaur Khalra, says her family is still searching for truth, justice, and accountability.

In an exclusive interview, Navkiran recalled the day her father was taken from outside their home in Amritsar, Punjab, on September 6, 1995. She said what began as an ordinary morning quickly turned into a lifelong nightmare after police allegedly detained him. His body has never been recovered.

Khalra became internationally known for investigating allegations of thousands of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings during the crackdown on the Sikh separatist movement in Punjab. His findings brought global attention to the issue but also reportedly made him a target.

After years of legal proceedings, several police officers were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for their roles in his murder. However, Navkiran believes true justice has not been achieved, arguing that many families are still waiting to learn what happened to their missing loved ones.

The family's story has recently gained renewed attention following the release of the feature film "Satluj," which portrays Khalra's life and work. Although the film was removed from streaming platforms in India over security concerns, community screenings have continued across Punjab and among Sikh communities abroad.

Navkiran said her father's legacy lives on because thousands of families are still seeking answers about relatives who disappeared decades ago, insisting that the pursuit of truth remains as important today as it was 30 years ago.
