2027 Elections: Atiku Absent as Tinubu, Obi, Others Sign National Peace Accord

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar was absent on Tuesday as presidential candidates and political parties signed the first National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, while Oyo State Governor and Allied People’s Movement (APM) presidential candidate Seyi Makinde was also represented.

The National Peace Committee, in partnership with the Kukah Centre, organised the ceremony to promote peaceful campaigns, respect for electoral institutions and issue-based political engagement.

Former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd.), urged politicians to avoid personal attacks, hate speech and character assassination.

President Tinubu, through Akume, said elections should not be treated as a do-or-die affair and urged political actors to campaign based on policies and ideas.

Peter Obi called for sanctions against politicians who violate the Peace Accord, while AAC candidate Omoyele Sowore questioned its effectiveness, citing previous incidents of political violence.

SDP candidate Adewole Adebayo also said the accord would have little meaning without justice, accountability and consequences for violators.

The Peace Accord seeks to ensure peaceful, credible and issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.
