The World Bank has clarified that Anambra State was not denied access to the 2024 HOPE-Governance Programme, stating that the state simply chose not to apply for participation.
According to the Bank's Implementation Status and Results Report, 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory expressed interest in joining the programme, while Anambra did not submit an application.
The report does not indicate that the state was disqualified or failed to meet any performance requirements. Instead, it notes that only states which formally expressed interest engaged with the World Bank on the programme.
Responding to the clarification, the Anambra State Government said its decision not to participate was intentional and based on administrative considerations rather than any form of rejection.
The state's Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, said the government carefully evaluates development programmes to ensure they align with its priorities and fiscal plans before making commitments.
He added that Anambra is currently conducting due diligence and holding discussions with the World Bank, stressing that the state remains open to participating in programmes that support its development objectives.
The government also urged the media and the public to verify information before drawing conclusions, saying reports that Anambra was denied the loan were inaccurate and misleading.
