U.S. Vice President JD Vance has said Britain has suffered from years of weak political leadership and expressed hope that the country's next prime minister will bring the reforms voters have been demanding.
Speaking in an interview published on Saturday, Vance pointed to the rapid turnover of British prime ministers as evidence that the country's political system faces deep structural problems. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who recently announced plans to step down, will be replaced by Britain's seventh prime minister in just a decade.
Vance said British voters are seeking meaningful change and voiced hope that the incoming leader—widely expected to be Andy Burnham—or any eventual successor would restore stability and put the country back on course.
Despite his criticism of Britain's political leadership, Vance praised the country and its people, describing the United Kingdom as one of America's closest allies. He emphasized that Washington would work closely with whoever becomes Britain's next prime minister.
His remarks come as the United States and the United Kingdom continue to maintain their long-standing "special relationship," even as they have differed on issues including Iran, Gaza and Ukraine. Both governments have nevertheless continued cooperation on trade, investment and security.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump previously described Starmer as a friend but criticized his handling of immigration and energy policies. Trump has also suggested that Burnham may take a different approach to North Sea oil and gas development.
Vance concluded that regardless of who leads Britain next, the United States remains committed to maintaining strong diplomatic and strategic ties with the UK.
