Vietnamese Activist Brings Rare National Attention to Gaza Crisis

A 28-year-old Vietnamese activist, Bao Ngoc, has drawn rare public attention in Vietnam to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza after joining the Global Sumud Flotilla, an aid mission that sought to break Israel's blockade and deliver relief supplies to Palestinians.

Bao Ngoc's participation gained widespread attention on Vietnamese social media, where many young people followed her journey and expressed solidarity with her message supporting Palestinians. In a country where political activism is tightly regulated, her campaign sparked an unusual national conversation about Gaza.

The mission took a dramatic turn when Israeli forces intercepted the flotilla in international waters, detaining Bao Ngoc and other participants for two days. Her prerecorded appeal for help quickly spread online, prompting supporters to launch petitions urging Vietnamese authorities to secure her release.

Although Vietnam's mainstream media initially remained silent, growing public pressure eventually led the Vietnamese Embassy in Israel to confirm it had worked to ensure her safe release alongside other activists.

Bao Ngoc said her support for Palestinians was strengthened by the devastating impact of the Gaza war. After leaving her master's programme in Singapore, she returned to Vietnam, co-founded the grassroots group VietForPalestine, and organised awareness campaigns and fundraising efforts for Gaza.

Analysts say her activism has resonated with many young Vietnamese by drawing parallels between Vietnam's own wartime history and the suffering of Palestinians, highlighting a growing wave of transnational solidarity across Southeast Asia.
