The United States has spent an estimated $37.5 billion on its military campaign against Iran, according to U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who urged Congress to approve emergency funding as the conflict continues.
Speaking before lawmakers in Washington, Hegseth said the figure includes both current military operations and projected expenses through September 30. He also requested support for a proposed $1.5 trillion U.S. defense budget for 2027, warning that without additional funding, military training, maintenance, and future defense programs could be affected.
The war has become a major political issue ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, with Democratic lawmakers criticizing the Trump administration for what they describe as a lack of transparency over the conflict's objectives and costs.
President Donald Trump had previously asked Congress for nearly $90 billion in supplemental funding, with most of the money intended to support operations related to the Iran conflict.
The Pentagon also confirmed that 18 U.S. service members have been killed since the war began, while about 430 troops have been injured. Officials said most of the wounded personnel have already returned to duty.
Meanwhile, fighting between the United States and Iran has intensified after a temporary ceasefire collapsed earlier this month. Both sides continue to launch daily attacks, raising concerns that the conflict could widen further.
The Pentagon maintains that additional funding is essential to sustain military operations and maintain U.S. defense readiness.
