The United States has condemned the killing of members of the family of Plateau-based cleric, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, describing the attack as horrific and calling on Nigerian authorities to bring those responsible to justice.
In a statement posted on X, the US Department of State's Bureau of African Affairs expressed sympathy to the victims' families and urged stronger efforts to protect vulnerable communities across Nigeria's Middle Belt.
The bureau said the continued violence against Christian communities and other vulnerable groups remains deeply concerning, stressing that urgent action is needed to prevent further attacks and ensure perpetrators are held accountable.
The US also reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Nigerian government to combat terrorism and violent extremism, emphasizing that all Nigerians should be able to practise their faith without fear.
The statement follows the July 12 attack on Kum community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, where nine members of Rev. Dachomo's extended family, including a two-month-old baby, were killed.
According to the cleric, the attackers allegedly asked for him by name before opening fire on his relatives. He said his family has been repeatedly targeted because of his outspoken criticism of the violence in Plateau State.
Rev. Dachomo also revealed that his grandmother and an uncle were killed in previous attacks. He added that after burying his relatives, he received a written death threat warning that he would be the next target.
Plateau State has witnessed years of recurring violence linked to farmer-herder clashes, communal tensions, and attacks by armed groups, leaving thousands dead and many others displaced despite ongoing security operations.
