A United States appeals court has ruled that President Donald Trump's name must remain off the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts while a legal appeal over the controversial renaming continues.
Trump's name was removed from the building's facade and signage last month after a federal judge ruled that the renaming was unlawful and ordered its removal. The court also blocked plans to close the center for renovations linked to the project.
On Wednesday, a three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected a request by the Kennedy Center's board of trustees to suspend the lower court's order during the appeal.
The judges said the board failed to demonstrate that it would suffer irreparable harm if Trump's name remained off the building while the legal process continues. They also found insufficient evidence to support claims that the removal would negatively affect fundraising efforts.
The lawsuit was filed by Democratic Representative Joyce Beatty, a member of the Kennedy Center's board, who welcomed the ruling, describing the earlier renaming as unlawful.
The legal dispute began after Trump became chairman of the Kennedy Center's board in 2025 following the replacement of its trustees. The board then voted to add his name to the institution, a decision that has since sparked a prolonged court battle.
The case will continue as the appeal moves forward.
