Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has launched the 2026 wet farming season with the distribution of 200 truckloads of NPK fertiliser at a 50 percent subsidised price to boost agricultural production across the state.
The governor also unveiled a large-scale agricultural support programme that will provide free farm inputs to more than 120,000 registered farmers. The intervention includes agrochemicals, certified seeds, knapsack sprayers, water pumps, bicycles and post-harvest storage facilities.
Speaking during the launch in Kwaya Kusar Local Government Area, Zulum said the initiative is aimed at strengthening food security, increasing farm productivity, creating jobs and improving the livelihoods of residents.
According to him, the programme covers the entire agricultural value chain, including mechanisation, irrigation, improved seeds, fertiliser distribution, extension services, post-harvest storage, agro-processing, market access and agricultural financing for women and young farmers.
The governor said the state procured 200 truckloads of high-quality NPK fertiliser, a significant increase from the 75 truckloads distributed during the previous farming season. Farmers will purchase the fertiliser at half of the current market price.
In addition, the government will distribute 40,000 litres of agrochemicals, 5,000 water pumps, 5,000 knapsack sprayers and 10,000 bicycles free of charge to support farming activities across the state.
Zulum warned beneficiaries against diverting or reselling the subsidised fertiliser, stressing that it is strictly meant for agricultural production.
The governor also announced a ₦500 million cash support package for vulnerable residents, women and youths in Biu, Hawul, Kwaya Kusar, Shani and Bayo local government areas to improve livelihoods and stimulate economic activities.
Borno State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Bawu Musami, said the state's sustained investment in agriculture is positioning it among Nigeria's leading agricultural producers.
The launch ceremony was attended by senior government officials, lawmakers, traditional rulers, local government chairmen and other stakeholders.
