A United Nations fact-finding mission has concluded that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) committed acts amounting to genocide during its assault on al-Fashir in Sudan's North Darfur region.
According to the report released on Wednesday, the RSF and allied militias carried out mass killings, widespread sexual violence, abductions of women and girls, and deliberately starved civilians by besieging the city and blocking humanitarian aid. Investigators said these actions formed part of a deliberate policy targeting civilians.
The UN also found that the RSF committed the war crime of starvation by preventing food and relief supplies from reaching residents and attacking food production systems during the siege.
Survivors told investigators they witnessed horrific abuses, including gang rapes and killings, with some victims assaulted in rooms where the bodies of family members remained.
The RSF has rejected the allegations, insisting the accusations are fabricated and accusing its opponents of committing similar crimes.
The UN warned that similar atrocities could occur in al-Obeid, where fighting has intensified and thousands of displaced civilians remain trapped. Human rights officials have urged the international community to act swiftly to prevent further humanitarian catastrophe.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF has entered its fourth year, leaving tens of thousands dead and millions displaced across the country.
