Technology company Meta has announced plans to invest C$13 billion (about US$9.2 billion) in building its first data centre in Canada, marking one of its largest artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure projects.
The facility will be located in Sturgeon County, Alberta, with an initial capacity of 1 gigawatt, expandable to 1.8 gigawatts, making it Meta's 33rd data centre worldwide.
The project is part of Meta's global expansion to meet the growing demand for AI computing power. Alberta was selected because of its abundant natural gas, relatively low energy costs, and cool climate, which helps reduce cooling expenses for large data centres.
Meta said it will finance the required power generation and grid infrastructure for the project. The company also pledged to offset its electricity consumption by investing in renewable and clean energy while using a closed-loop liquid cooling system designed to minimize water use.
The development is expected to boost Alberta's economy and increase demand for natural gas, with local energy companies partnering to supply electricity for the facility.
However, environmental groups have criticized the project, arguing that the province's heavy dependence on natural gas could increase carbon emissions and calling for stronger environmental safeguards for large AI data centres.
